Centro Cultural do Cartaxo

North of Lisbon, there is a typical rustic area, which was predominantly a farming area for several decades. Even now, Lezíria do Tejo is still the major producer of meat and cereals. Its landscape is marked by this intensive activity, which has naturally been scattered with buildings. The Cartaxo Cultural Centre, whose architectural language is in harmony with some of the paradigms of international architecture, makes a propositional cut in the constructed landscape and consequently in the social and urban reality. As the intention is to create a new landscape, a new reality, a new imaginary place, this attitude as an extremely artificial intruder in the panorama reminds us of the Calvinist attitudes of Northern Europe and the architectural references of the Anglo-Saxon structuralists and brutalists.
