Vulcão dos Capelinhos (Capelinhos Volcano) Interpretation Centre

Print
The Vulcão dos Capelinhos was the last volcano in the Azores to be recently active. It is unlikely to travel through this region without feeling the presence of the volcanic origins of the islands, and the central group is, without a doubt, characterised by this presence and memory. The Interpretation Centre is like a journey to the interior of the earth. A journey which enables you to understand evolution, through various examples and comparisons with other international volcanoes. The interpretation centre is invisible from the outside, as it is located on an underground floor, taking over the floor that had been buried. We enter a level below the square which serves as a view-point, through a rip in the earth made by two concrete support walls. Inside, a central pillar in the shape of a "mushroom" prevails, from which the exhibition unfolds.
