The museum is set up in the Convento Dominicano de S. Gonçalo de Amarante (former Library) dating back to the 16th and 18th Centuries and encompasses an estate representing local history and artists and writers that were born in Amarante. It is currently more geared towards modern and contemporary Portuguese art, namely painting and sculpture, its main references being the painters António Carneiro and Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso. In fact, Amadeo - the most famous of the Portuguese modernist painters - and his work are the museum's main reference.
