Museu de Portimão

Print
The Portimão Museum came about as a result of the reconversion of a former industrial complex which was once a sardine canning factory. An exemplary museum in terms of management, it has won several awards: “European Museum of the Year Award 2010” , “DASA – Working World Award 2011”, and received honourable mentions in the “Turismo de Portugal 2009” awards and by the Portuguese Association of Museum Science in the “Best Portuguese Museum” category, awarded in 2008. Its rehabilitation has been made by adding several volumetrics to the main building of the former factory. The intervention provided the building with capacity to carry out its necessary functions, exhibition rooms, documentation centre, auditorium, bar-restaurant and respective functional support. The essential presence of the main volumetric of the former factory keeps its memory in a perfect relationship with the urban space, and that is the image of the museum that will be remembered.
